Shop Talk

Sorry we’ve been out of commission here for a while. I don’t really understand how the internet works, but I imagine some gerbil somewhere stopped running. Those crazy gerbils.

If you read my entry about the “Glory” string arrangement, there’s another chapter to the story. The first draft, which I thought was the final draft, was met with less than the enthusiasm I expected. You’ll remember that I decided the song was very white and that forcing eastern-ness upon it fell somewhere between inadvisable and impossible. Well, the producer disagreed with me on that, so I suggested we rewrite the arrangement together. We spent something like three days working together in his basement and emerged with something I’m very proud of. We kept joking that we were going to take it to our Belmont profs and demand an honorary doctorate (anybody with a real doctorate is probably insulted by that remark, and rightly so.) Suffice it to say it’s a durn good arrangement. I enjoyed the collaboration a ton. The strings are recorded now and I can’t wait for you to hear the whole deal.

In other news, if you read the “Hand in the Dark” entry, might I ask you not to worry about me too much? Everything I wrote was honest, but I should tell you that, though I do have a bit of genuine melancholy in me, I also have a flare for the mellodramatic (i.e. I tend to exaggerate when I’m feeling blue). I hope I haven’t let the air out of the balloon by admitting this.

That’s all. Be well.
